What am I seeing?

How to fix it
Download and run the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility so Windows* properly recognizes the SMBus controller.

Cannot get a connection due to missing sm bus, network and ethernet controller drivers. I reinstalled the chipset drivers off of Dells website. I have a Dell XPS 8300- I also downloaded the BCM (Broadcom) network driver from the dell website however after executing the file my computer tells me that my processor does NOT support that type. Mar 17, 2013 - Expand 'Universal Serial Bus controllers'; From the list, look for 'USB Root Hub'. Please ensure to update Chipset driver for your computer.

NoteSMBus is the System Management Bus used in personal computers and servers for low-speed, system management communications. A SMBus controller is integrated into most Intel® chipsets.

You can get information from Control panel, Performance information & tools. On the right-hand side, underneath a box for Base score, click on View & print detailed performance & system information. In the large dialog box that opens, note that your Windows 7 Edition is identified in the top table of the screen just under the shaded section & it will be identified as Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise [Enterprise is used within larger companies].Also note the entry in the System section, System type - this will be either 64-bit operating system or 32-bit operating system. This dialog box also has a print button at the top so you can keep the information for future reference.

If you used to have 64 bit but reinstalled from the 32 bit ISO then the 64 bit drivers from Dell will fail. The fact that the error message used the word 'type' does make me suspect that you have used the wrong ISO as 'type' is the word Windows uses to refer to 32 bit / 64 bit.

You could choose to fix the current installation by sorting out 32 bit drivers for it [if it is currently 32 bit Windows] or, as you intend, you could install the 64 bit Windows to get back to where you used to be. Get your anti-malware application up & running first and then you can use Windows Update and Dell Drivers & downloads to get back the drivers you need & also the Dell QuickSet utility that sets up the multi-media keys on your keyboard [amongst other things]. Note that you will have lost some Dell utilities as they are not all available on their website but the only part that was particularly useful was a facility for saving the Dell Factory Restore partition to USB/DVD and I think you lost that with the Ubuntu business.
